Mad World - Tears For Fears vs Gary Jules

Mad World is a really great song from Tears For Fears's first album, The Hurting (1983). The song was written by Roland Orzabal, who wrote almost all of TFF's songs, and sung by Curt Smith, one of the 80's great pop voices. The official video was clearly made with absolutely no money. It features Curt Smith sitting at a window while Orzabal is making some funny dance movements outside. Rather funny.
Mad World est une excellente chanson de Tears For Fears, un tube figurant sur leur premier album, The Hurting (1983). La chanson a été écrite par Roland Orzabal, qui a composé presque toutes les chansons du groupe, et elle était chantée par Curt Smith, l'une des grandes voix pop des années 80. Le clip officiel est fauché de chez fauché mais plutôt rigolo. On y voit Curt Smith assis à une fenêtre pendant qu'Orzabal s'agite dans des mouvements de danse passablement ridicules.

Years later, Gary Jules and Michael Andrews covered the song for the soundtrack of that very strange and beautiful movie that was Donnie Darko (2001). They turned it into a totally different song, a very melancholic ballad. It's gloomy and beautiful but lacks the madness created by the original version's rythm. Still a very good version. And the video shot by Michel Gondry is one of the best that I've recently seen.
Des années plus tard, Gary Jules et Michael Andrews ont repris la chanson pour la BO d'un film très étrange et très beau : Donnie Darko (2001). Ils en ont fait quelque chose de complètement différent, une ballade dépressive pour ado tourmenté. Cette version cafardeuse est fort belle, mais il lui manque la folie qui jaillit du rythme très asséné de l'original. Très bien tout de même. Et le clip de Michel Gondry est l'un des meilleurs qui j'aie vus récemment.

A nice ballad by The Scissor Sisters. The song and the video reminds me a lot of James Bond movies. I'm also convinced that two of the naked models are the singers, Jake Shears and Ana Matronic.

For those who miss their fix of True Blood, Alan Ball, the creator of the series, shot six webisodes of a few minutes. His first one features vampires Eric (Alex Skarsgard) and Pam (Kristin Bauer) obviously looking for a new dancer.
Pour ceux qui sont en manque de True Blood, voici un petit webisode humoristique réalisé par Alan Ball lui-même (le créateur de la série). La troisième saison est prévue pour juin, mais Alan Ball a pris le temps de filmer six mini-épisodes de quelques minutes mettant en scène les héros de la série. Le premier voit des danseuses et danseurs fort courts-vêtus auditionner devant les vampires Eric (Alex Skarsgard) et Pam (Kristin Bauer).

Tiny Goddess - Nirvana (UK) and young Françoise Hardy

In 1969, Françoise Hardy released En Anglais, already released in 1968 for the English market as The Second English Album (since she had already recorded Françoise Hardy In English, her first English album, in 1966). Unlike Françoise Hardy In English, which was a collection of covers of original English songs and of English adaptations of her songs, En Anglais is only made of covers of English songs.
En 1969, Françoise Hardy sort En Anglais, déjà sorti en 1968 pour le marché anglophone sous le titre de The Second British Album (elle avait déjà sorti un premier album anglais en 1966 : Françoise Hardy In English). Contrairement à Françoise Hardy In English, qui était une collection d'adaptations de chansons françaises en anglais et de reprises de chansons anglaises, En Anglais est uniquement composé de reprises anglaises.

Some of these covers are very beautiful. It's the case of her version of a famous song by Nirvana (the 1960's Brit prog-rock band, nothing to do with Kurt Cobain) : Tiny Goddess. No words to describe it. Just listen.

The original version is very beautiful too, even if, for me, it lacks the very peculiar kind of dreamy melancholy that Françoise Hardy's thin and soft voice gives to all the songs she sings.

Young Françoise Hardy sings in German

In 1965, Françoise Hardy released Françoise In Germany, an album that had been exclusively conceived for the German audience and was never to be released in France. Some of the songs were adaptation of French songs, like Peter Und Lou, which was the German version of Tous Les Garçons Et Les Filles, but there were five songs that were directly written in German. Among them was the extremely cute Dann Bist Du Verliebt.
En 1965, Françoise Hardy sort Françoise In Germany, un album conçu tout spécialement pour le public allemand et qui ne sortira jamais en France. Certaines des chansons figurant sur cet album étaient des adaptations de chansons françaises, comme Peter Und Lou, version allemande du très célèbre Tous Les Garçons Et Les Filles, mais on trouvait aussi sur ce disque cinq titres directement écrits en allemand, comme le très charmant Dann Bist Du Verliebt.

Someone on Youtube had the excellent idea to upload an extract from a 1960's German show where you can see a very young and very pretty Françoise, wearing a "schwarze smoking" by Saint Laurent, chat with a nice German presenter, then sing Dann Bist Du Verliebt.
Un membre Youtube a eu la très bonne idée de mettre en ligne un extrait d'un show allemand des années 60 où l'on voit une toute jeune et très jolie Françoise vêtue d'un "schwarze smoking" de Saint Laurent discuter avec un fort sympathique présentateur allemand puis interpréter en (faux, vraisemblablement) live Dann Bist Du Verliebt.

Cinq ans plus tard, en 1970, Françoise Hardy sort un autre disque exclusivement destiné au public germanophone : Träume. On trouve sur ce disque une chanson éponyme, sans doute l'une des plus belles jamais interprétées par Françoise Hardy. J'avais découvert cette chanson il y a dix ans, lorsque j'étais allée voir au cinéma Gouttes D'Eau Sur Pierres Brûlantes, une adaptation par François Ozon d'une pièce de Fassbinder (c'est d'ailleurs l'un des rares flms d'Ozon que j'apprécie). Je n'avais pas reconnu la voix et j'avais raté la mention de la chanson pendant le générique de fin. J'ai mis des années à savoir qui chantait cette chanson. Quand j'ai finalement trouvé, j'en suis restée bouche bée. Je pensais que l'interprète était allemande (je ne suis pas germaniste et je ne me rendais pas compte que tout cela était chanté avec un assez fort accent français, tout de même) et, surtout, peu connue ...
Five years later, in 1970, Françoise Hardy released a second album for the German market : Träume. On the record is an eponymous song which is probably one of the most beautiful songs ever sung by Françoise Hardy. I first heard it ten years ago, when I went to the cinema to see Water Drops On Burning Rocks, an adaptation by François Ozon of a Fassbinder play (it's also one of the few films by Ozon that I like). I didn't recognize the voice and I didn't manage to read the name of the singer while the credits were rolling. It took me years to discover who the singer was, and when I learnt it was Françoise Hardy, I was flabbergasted. I thought the singer was German (I don't speak German and I hadn't noticed the strong French accent) and, mostly, little known ...

An absolute rarity and a really great cover of that classic originally performed by The Supremes and covered years later by Kim Wilde. I didn't even know it existed. A poster on youtube says it's probably a live performance for It Must Be Dusty on ITV in 1968.

I've never been a fan of countertenors. I neither really like the sound of their voices, nor their usual lack of power and weak low register. Having said that, I have to admit I'm totally in love with German singer Andreas Scholl, whose voice is one of the most beautiful I've ever heard. There's also another exception to my no-countertenors rule : Croatian singer Max Emanuel Cencic (when he's not singing Rossini, a genre in which I find him very limited). American singer David Daniels could be mentioned too if only his terrible mannerisms didn't make him unbearable most of the time. His recording of Bach arias is probably one of the worst things I've heard in that repertoire : both kitsch and boring.
Je n'ai jamais été fana des contre-ténors. Je n'aime normalement pas beaucoup le son du falsetto, et leur manque de puissance me gêne, sans parler de la faiblesse de leurs graves. Cela étant dit, je dois admettre que je suis folle du chanteur allemand Andreas Scholl, dont la voix est l'une des plus belles que j'aie jamais entendues. Autre exception à la règle : le Croate Max Emanuel Cencic (quand il ne chante pas Rossini, un compositeur dans lequel je le trouve franchement limité). J'aurais bien ajouté l'Américain David Daniels à la liste, si ses maniérismes de cocotte ne m'insupportaient pas au plus haut point la plupart du temps. Son enregistrement d'arias de Bach est probablement l'une des pires choses qu'il m'ait été donné d'entendre dans ce répertoire : kitsch et chiant à la fois.

French countertenor Philippe Jaroussky is a singer I've never liked. I've never really understood the praises he keeps getting from French critics when it comes to sheer vocal material. I don't like the sound of his voice, a voice which is quite thin and not very colourful. I'm generally not very impressed either with his performances, that I tend to find dull. I've always regarded him as very, very average : average voice for an average performer. Hence my surprise when I heard an extract of a Monteverdi record he made with Christina Pluhar called Theatro d'Amore. The extract was a live version of a very famous Monteverdi (1567-1643) madrigal : Ohimè ch'io cado. It's absolutely fantastic. It's some kind of jazzy improvisation on Monteverdi's score. Jaroussky is truly great and so are Pluhar and her musicians. It's a crazy version of that madrigal but it's one of the best I've ever heard. Here it is :
Le contre-ténor français Philippe Jaroussky est un chanteur que je n'ai jamais aimé. Je n'ai jamais vraiment compris pourquoi les critiques français passaient leur temps à faire l'éloge de la beauté de sa voix. Je n'aime pas cette voix. Je la trouve riquiqui et sans couleur. Et puis je ne suis pas très impressionnée par ses interprétations, que j'ai tendance à trouver plutôt ternes. Je l'ai toujours considéré comme un chanteur très, très moyen : une voix médiocre pour un interprète médiocre. D'où ma surprise lorsque j'ai entendu un extrait du disque Monteverdi Theatro d'Amore qu'il a enregistré avec Christina Pluhar (c'était l'année dernière, dans ma voiture, en revenant du boulot). L'extrait en question était une version live d'un très célèbre madrigal de Monteverdi (1567-1643) : Ohimè ch'io cado. Vraiment incroyable. C'est une sorte d'impro jazzy sur la partition de Monteverdi. Jaroussky est génial. Même chose pour Pluhar et son ensemble. C'est une version complètement barrée du madrigal en question, mais c'est l'une des meilleures que je connaisse. A vous de juger :
