The Impossible Dream

In France, Broadway's musical Man of La Mancha (an adaptation of Don Quixote by Dale Wasserman, Joe Darion and Mitch Leigh) is mostly known thanks to Jacques Brel, who was the reason for its French adaptation in 1968. The musical is known in France as L'Homme de La Mancha and its famous hit, The Impossible Dream, as La Quête.

There are of course many versions of this standard performed by various singers. Here are a few that I especially like.

The Impossible Dream - absolutely charming singer Jack Jones - 1966 live performance

The Impossible Dream - wonderful version by Elvis - live at Madison Square Garden NY - 1972

And of course there are a few versions by famous opera singers like this one (the video can't be embedded) by Mexican tenor Rolando Villazón, who yells a little bit too much for my taste. As for me, I uploaded what's probably one of the best versions I've ever heard : the one sung by the incredible Welsh bass-baritone Bryn Terfel. His voice is so powerful that he doesn't need to push it, and he's got the power for the extremely dramatic part in the end (that power that even the best like Jack Jones, Sinatra or Elvis lack), and he's never too heavy (too operatic, if you like).

The Impossible Dream - Bryn Terfel (sorry for the sound that's not great and for the length of the video : don't know what happened here :s).

I wonder what Nathan Gunn would sound like singing this song. Let's hope he'll sing it one day.
J'aimerais bien entendre Nathan Gunn chanter cet air.
