Stay Awhile - Dusty Springfield

One of Dusty's most famous songs. I haven't really posted any of Dusty's famous hits (apart from The Look Of Love and Son Of A Preacher Man). I thought it would be nice to start with that song penned by Ivor Raymonde and Mike Hawker and released in 1964.

Pour Fabrice, Fade To Grey, du goupe anglais Visage, gros tube des années 1980 composé par Billy Currie, Christopher Payne et Midge Ure. On l'entend toujours sur les ondes, d'ailleurs.

Since it was impossible to find the original version of the song by Dee Dee Warwick, I decided to make a small vid of it myself (don't expect anything exciting) and to post it on youtube.

How I love that version ...

Cock Robin

A completely different style of music now : 80's American band Cock Robin. They didn't really manage to make it in the States, but were huge in Europe. I remember getting fed up with their songs in the 80's, because you couldn't switch on the radio without bumping into them. I've recently rediscovered them. I was amazed by how classy their songs actually were. The tunes, the voices, the arrangements : everything was so subtle. It's probably why those songs aged that well. They also had great videos. I still remember the When Your Heart Is Weak clip.
Un style de musique très différent pour ce post : celui des Californiens de Cock Robin, fameux groupe des années 80, qui connut un énorme succès en Europe (à défaut de le connaitre dans son propre pays). Je me souviens qu'à l'époque, je n'en pouvais plus d'entendre leurs chansons à la radio (à ma décharge, elles passaient en boucle). Je les ai redécouverts récemment et j'ai été impressionnée : la classe. Des mélodies impeccables, des arrangements sophistiqués, des voix magnifiques. En plus, ils avaient de belles vidéos, comme celle de When Your Heart Is Weak, que je n'ai jamais oubliée.

A song I absolutely love, written by the great Motown trio : Brian Holland, Edward Holland and Lamont Dozier, for one of my favourite Motown bands, The Vandellas, and their great lead singer, Martha Reeves, in 1963.

On trouve quelques très bonnes reprises de ce classique sur youtube. Celle que je préfère, parce que pleine de swing et très fidèle à l'esprit tout en étant très différente (et aussi à cause de l'interprète, of course), est celle de Dusty Springfield - laquelle était une bonne copine de Martha, par ailleurs.

Autre très bonne version (si l'on passe sur la médiocrité des backing vocals du bassiste et du guitariste), celle des Animals et de leur voix légendaire, Eric Burdon. Très bon live des années 60, pris lors d'un concert en Allemagne, semblerait-il.
