I've never been a fan of countertenors. I neither really like the sound of their voices, nor their usual lack of power and weak low register. Having said that, I have to admit I'm totally in love with German singer Andreas Scholl, whose voice is one of the most beautiful I've ever heard. There's also another exception to my no-countertenors rule : Croatian singer Max Emanuel Cencic (when he's not singing Rossini, a genre in which I find him very limited). American singer David Daniels could be mentioned too if only his terrible mannerisms didn't make him unbearable most of the time. His recording of Bach arias is probably one of the worst things I've heard in that repertoire : both kitsch and boring.
Je n'ai jamais été fana des contre-ténors. Je n'aime normalement pas beaucoup le son du falsetto, et leur manque de puissance me gêne, sans parler de la faiblesse de leurs graves. Cela étant dit, je dois admettre que je suis folle du chanteur allemand Andreas Scholl, dont la voix est l'une des plus belles que j'aie jamais entendues. Autre exception à la règle : le Croate Max Emanuel Cencic (quand il ne chante pas Rossini, un compositeur dans lequel je le trouve franchement limité). J'aurais bien ajouté l'Américain David Daniels à la liste, si ses maniérismes de cocotte ne m'insupportaient pas au plus haut point la plupart du temps. Son enregistrement d'arias de Bach est probablement l'une des pires choses qu'il m'ait été donné d'entendre dans ce répertoire : kitsch et chiant à la fois.

French countertenor Philippe Jaroussky is a singer I've never liked. I've never really understood the praises he keeps getting from French critics when it comes to sheer vocal material. I don't like the sound of his voice, a voice which is quite thin and not very colourful. I'm generally not very impressed either with his performances, that I tend to find dull. I've always regarded him as very, very average : average voice for an average performer. Hence my surprise when I heard an extract of a Monteverdi record he made with Christina Pluhar called Theatro d'Amore. The extract was a live version of a very famous Monteverdi (1567-1643) madrigal : Ohimè ch'io cado. It's absolutely fantastic. It's some kind of jazzy improvisation on Monteverdi's score. Jaroussky is truly great and so are Pluhar and her musicians. It's a crazy version of that madrigal but it's one of the best I've ever heard. Here it is :
Le contre-ténor français Philippe Jaroussky est un chanteur que je n'ai jamais aimé. Je n'ai jamais vraiment compris pourquoi les critiques français passaient leur temps à faire l'éloge de la beauté de sa voix. Je n'aime pas cette voix. Je la trouve riquiqui et sans couleur. Et puis je ne suis pas très impressionnée par ses interprétations, que j'ai tendance à trouver plutôt ternes. Je l'ai toujours considéré comme un chanteur très, très moyen : une voix médiocre pour un interprète médiocre. D'où ma surprise lorsque j'ai entendu un extrait du disque Monteverdi Theatro d'Amore qu'il a enregistré avec Christina Pluhar (c'était l'année dernière, dans ma voiture, en revenant du boulot). L'extrait en question était une version live d'un très célèbre madrigal de Monteverdi (1567-1643) : Ohimè ch'io cado. Vraiment incroyable. C'est une sorte d'impro jazzy sur la partition de Monteverdi. Jaroussky est génial. Même chose pour Pluhar et son ensemble. C'est une version complètement barrée du madrigal en question, mais c'est l'une des meilleures que je connaisse. A vous de juger :

The Runaways - The movie

A small post about the upcoming movie The Runaways. I guess most people are going to talk about it because Joan Jett's played by Kristen Stewart of Twilight fame. I have absolutely nothing against that young actress, who was good in The Safety Of Objects (a very good movie that I recommend) and Panic Room (a rather terrible movie in which Kristen Stewart plays the daughter of Jodie Foster's character and that I don't recommend at all). I remember that when I first saw her, my first thought was : "Here's a cute little boy".
Un petit post sur The Runaways, dont la sortie en Europe est prévue pour bientôt. Je suppose qu'on va surtout parler de Kristen Stewart (la jeune héroïne de la bouse Twilight) qui joue Joan Jett, dans le film. Je n'ai absolument rien contre cette jeune actrice, que j'ai trouvée très bien dans The Safety Of Objects (très bon film que je recommande) et Panic Room (une bouzasse de Fincher dans laquelle Kristen Stewart jouait la fille du personnage interprété par Jodie Foster). Je me souviens que la première fois que je l'ai vue, j'ai pensé : "Quel joli petit garçon !"



Hence my surprise when I realised, a few years later, that she had become the romantic lead in some successful but silly vampire movie. I would have rather imagined some kind of career à la Kate Moennig (I mean professionnally, of course, don't start assuming other things). One can be wrong.
D'où ma surprise quand je me suis rendue compte, quelques années plus tard, qu'elle interprétait le rôle de l'héroïne romantique dans un nanar vampirique pour boutonneux. On m'aurait demandé, je lui aurais plutôt prédit une carrière à la Kate Moennig (je parle de carrière professionnelle, hein). Comme quoi, on peut se planter.

Off topic, though. Let's go back to our movie. So, yes : I suppose people are mostly going to mention Kristen Stewart as Joan Jett, all the more since she was coached by Joan herself for the movie. I haven't seen the movie yet, of course, but, from what I saw in the trailer and in the teasers that hit the net, the reason to see that movie will probably be Dakota Fanning as Cherie Currie. Her rendition of Cherry Bomb is simply amazing :

Donc, oui : je suppose que l'on va surtout parler de Stewart en Joan Jett, et ce d'autant plus que c'est Joan elle-même qui a coaché l'actrice pendant le tournage. Je n'ai, bien sûr, pas encore vu le film, mais, d'après ce que j'ai pu voir dans la bande annonce et dans les extraits disponibles sur le net, la principale raison d'aller voir ce film pourrait bien être Dakota Fanning, laquelle joue le rôle de Cherie Currie. Sa performance dans Cherry Bomb est, en effet, assez incroyable :

Not bad, is it ? Just compare with the original. Even better when you know that Joan Jett confirmed that all the songs were indeed sung by Stewart and Fanning and that there was no dubbing. Let's hope it's true. I don't really like it when actors can't sing and have to be dubbed. You generally can tell that they're not the ones singing.
Pas mal, non ? Comparez donc avec l'original. Encore mieux quand on sait que Joan Jett a confirmé que toutes les chansons étaient bien chantées par Stewart et Fanning et qu'il n' y avait pas de doublage. J'espère que c'est vrai. Je n'aime vraiment pas voir des acteurs incapables de chanter être doublés pour les chansons. Neuf fois sur dix, on voit carrément que ce ne sont pas eux qui chantent.

The Runaways - The band

Since The Runaways, the biopic about Joan Jett's first band, with Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning, is about to be internationally released, I felt like writing a post about that terrific and short-lived female punk rock band. That American band was formed in 1975 and its founding members were two very young girls who were barely more than 15 at the time : Joan Jett, who was in charge of rhythm guitar, and drummer Sandy West. They were joined by Micki Steele, who would be their first bass player and their first singer. She would later be replaced as a bassist by Jackie Fox ( on the picture above) and as a singer by a young girl who would become the band's star : Cherie Currie. The final addition would be lead guitarist Lita Ford.
Vu que le film The Runaways , ce biopic sur Joan Jett avec Kristen Stewart et Dakota Fanning, est sur le point de sortir en Europe, j'ai eu envie de rédiger un post sur cet excellent groupe punk des années 70. Un groupe franchement étonnant : une bande de gamines âgées d'à peine plus de 15 ans balançant des paroles provocantes sur un bon gros son rock qui fait des taches. Le truc inouï à l'époque, et impossible de nos jours : les nanas seraient illico absorbées par le système et pouffisées en un rien de temps par les pros du marketing et de la com'.
Grand groupe donc que les Runaways, fondé en 1975 par Joan Jett, qui en deviendrait la guitariste rythmique, et par la batteuse Sandy West. Devait les rejoindre Micki Steele, première bassiste et chanteuse du groupe, qui serait plus tard remplacée par Jackie Fox à la basse et, au chant, par celle qui allait devenir LA star du groupe : Cherie Currie. Dernière addition : la guitariste soliste Lita Ford.

The band never really became that successful in the States (if you compare it with other bands that were just as underground at the beginning, like The Ramones or Blondie) but became huge in Japan. It's after their Japanese tour that Cherie Currie, who was obviously finding it more and more difficult to bear the pressure of fame - not to mention her problems with drugs and alcohol, decided to leave the band. She was replaced as the vocalist by Joan but it didn't save the band which finally split in 1979.
Le groupe ne connut jamais, aux États-Unis, la gloire que d'autres groupes dont les noms sont associés au milieu punk underground purent connaître (comme Blondie ou les Ramones), mais il rencontra un succès énorme au Japon. C'est d'ailleurs après la tournée japonaise du groupe que Cherie Currie, qui supportaient de plus en plus mal la pression (sans parler de ses problèmes de drogue et d'alcool), décida de partir. C'est Joan qui la remplaça alors au chant mais cela ne sauva pas le groupe qui se sépara finalement en 1979.

After the split, Joan formed another band, The Blackhearts, and then came the huge mainstream success with a cover of The Arrows' I Love Rock 'n' Roll. Lita Ford started a successful solo career and became one of the most highly regarded female guitar players in rock history. Cherie Currie had a short solo career as a singer and as an actress and is now a wood carving artist. With chainsaw. Once badass, always badass ...
Après la séparation, Joan monta un nouveau groupe, les Blackhearts, avec lequel elle connut la gloire grâce à la reprise du classique rock des Arrows : I Love Rock 'n' Roll. Lita Ford se lança dans une carrière solo. Elle est aujourd'hui considérée comme une excellente guitariste de rock. Après une courte carrière solo et quelques rôles à la télé, Cherie Currie s'est éloignée de la scène. Elle s'adonne désormais à la sculpture sur bois. A la tronçonneuse. On ne se refait pas ...

The one who suffered the most from the split was Sandy West. She never really managed to make it in music afterwards, and had to live on very little money doing small jobs. She died of lung cancer in 2005. What is even more sad is that she'll never have the joy of watching The Runaways, that movie about her "baby".
Celle qui souffrit le plus de la mort du groupe fut certainement la batteuse Sandy West. Elle ne réussit jamais à faire carrière dans la musique par la suite et vécut assez misérablement, enchaînant les petits boulots mal payés et s'adonnant même, à un moment, à la petite criminalité pour pouvoir boucler ses fins de mois. Elle est morte d'un cancer du poumon en 2005, et c'est assez triste de penser qu'elle n'aura jamais le plaisir de voir The Runaways. Ce film lui aurait sans doute fait chaud au cœur.

Note to everybody who loves Kim Wilde : she'll be in Belgium on the 24th of April 2010 for The Night Of The Proms. The concert will take place at Charleroi's Spiroudôme. Texas' singer, Sharleen Spiteri, and DIV4S, a group of sopranos, will be there too. French singer-songwriter Laurent Voulzy has also just been programmed. No doubt that he'll perform Les Nuits Sans Kim Wilde with his good friend Kim. Further information here.

Each time I watch this clip, I think about Top Gun, because of the planes and of the fact that Kim looks quite a lot like Kelly McGillis in it.
